The Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) has installed 10 million smartmeters, replacing analogue meters, in less than14 months, despite the operational challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Of the 10 million units installed, 4 million were manufactured locally so as to reduce Saudi Arabia’s reliance on technology importsas well as to generate jobs locally. The smart meters project has laid the firm’s foundation for future grid modernisation and digital transformation programmes.
