South Africa’s Eskom to cut electricity nationwide

South African electric utility Eskom will implement nationwide scheduled power cuts from 1700 hours (local time) until Tuesday due to breakdowns at seven of its power plants.

The breakdowns at the plants led to a total loss of 6,044 MW thereby bringing the total unplanned capacity lost to 16,118 MW. The company is facing steam leaks at its Matla plant, while generation has also been affected at the Medupi, Kusile and Dhuva plants. The state utility supplies about 95 per cent of South Africa’s electricity needs but it’s been struggling to meet demand.
