World Bank approves USD465 million regional electricity access and battery storage project in West Africa

The World Bank has approved financing worth USD465 million for executing the Regional Electricity Access and Battery Energy Storage Technologies (BEST) Project for the member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).  

The project aims to expand access to grid electricity to over one million people, enhance power system stability for another 3.5 million people, increase renewable energy integration in the West Africa Power Pool (WAPP) with related transmission and investment, build the capacity of the ECOWAS Regional Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERERA), and strengthen the WAPP’s network operation with BEST infrastructure. ECOWAS was established in 1975, to promote economic integration among the West African countries.
