NTPC to set up 1,000 MW capacity grid-scale battery storage systems

NTPC Limited has proposed to set up 1,000 MW capacity of grid-scale battery storage systems in its power plants.

NTPC has floated an expression interest (EoI) seeking responses from global suppliers interested in the project. The last date for bid submission in response to the EoI is August 10, 2021 and bids will be opened the following day. Energy storage systems are necessary for integrating 450 GW of planned renewable energy (RE) generation capacity in the power grid, by 2030. The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has outlined a need for 27 GW of grid-scale battery storage systems with four hours of storage, by 2030. The government has also announced a waiver on inter-state transmission charges for battery storage systems commissioned before June 2025, if at least 70 per cent of charging requirement is met through RE sources.
