Bangladesh scraps 10 major coal power projects to focus on RE generation

Bangladesh has cancelled at least 10 major coal power generation projects as it aims to scale up its renewable energy (RE) power generation.

The scrapped power plants had a cumulative capacity of about 8,451 MW and included some multi-billion-dollar projects such as a 1,320 MW plant on the Maheshkhali island and a 1,200 MW plant to be constructed by a Bangladesh-Japan joint venture. Most of these power plants were planned to be constructed in the coastal region of Bangladesh. They could have caused irreparable ecological damage to the country’s already fragile ecology. Bangladesh is set to import hydropower from Nepal and Bhutan.
