With over 20 years of experience in the solar and semiconductor domains, Deepak Ushadevi’s expertise lies in new business initiatives, technology introduction and market development. Before joining Ciel & Terre India, he worked for global giants such as Global Foundries and Applied Materials, as well as leading Indian companies such as Tata Power Solar and Waaree Energies. He was a part of the first Hydrelio patented floating solar project commissioned in India at the Cochin International Airport in 2019 by Ciel & Terre India.
In his current role as managing director of Ciel & Terre India, he is instrumental in developing the solar floating market and interacting with major nodal agencies, PSUs, top EPC companies and developers to provide floating solar guidelines, and know-how for the development of quality and bankable floating projects.
Ushadevi remarks, “Every project that we worked on is unique and the years of experience in the floating solar domain have helped us sustain high quality deliverables. Our recently installed floating solar plants in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal were some of the most exciting and challenging floating solar projects. These projects, with respective capacities of 14.7 MWp and 5.4 MWp, were completed amidst the pandemic, with unpredictable lockdowns, and issues with logistics and manpower. But this brought out our team’s strength and ownership.”
Considering the growing energy demand and land scarcity, the scope for floating solar technology is bright, Ushadevi believes. However, a proper study of the topography, standard penetration tests, static and dynamic wave assessments, engineering techniques, wind and wave data, and bathymetric studies are required to solve the problems faced by developers.
On his management style, Ushadevi says, “Empowering employees, and giving responsibilities and space to your colleagues enhance productivity. I always try to cultivate a team culture based on self-belief, trust and perseverance to drive individual contribution by each employee.”
Ushadevi likes participating in renewable energy-based panel discussions and interactive sessions with young entrepreneurs and students. In the future, he wishes to see more renewable projects realised with Hydrelio-based floating solar solutions across the globe. He spends his spare time with his family and friends, and enjoys taking road trips to explore new destinations.
