Peak power demand records all-time high of 197,060 MW

The peak power demand in India reached an all-time high of 197,060 MW on July 6, 2021.

High temperatures in many states due to delayed monsoon and easing of COVID-19 related restrictions have led to a surge in power demand. Last year, the peak power demand stood at 182.45 GW in June 2019. However, it must be notedthat the installed generation capacity of the country is 383,373 MW which is nearly twice the peak demand level, implying that most power plants are running at a low plant load factor (PLF). The utilisation level of thermal power plants was 54 per cent in May 2021.
