China reopens 53 coal mines to address increasing demand for power

China’s National Development and Reform Commission have announced that 53 coal mines across the country have restarted operations due to a surge in power demand.

15 of these coal mines are located across northern region of China ranging from Inner Mongolia to Shanxi.The remaining 38 mines are located in Inner Mongolia, which were restarted in July 2021. The cumulative annual production capacity of these mines is over 110 million tonnes per year.The coal mines’ operations were resumed to address the rising prices of thermal coal in China which hit a record high in May 2021.
