MoP advices central government offices to switch over to prepaid smart meters on priority

The Ministry of Power (MoP) has advised all central ministries and departments to switch to prepaid smart electricity meters.

This comes after the Ministry of Finance issued a clarification allowing all central ministries and central departments to make advance payments for prepaid metered electricity without requiring any bank guarantees, as long as adequate accounting systems are in place. Prepaid smart metering in all government departments would not only demonstrate the government’s commitment to getting discoms back on track to financial sustainability and energy efficiency, but it would also serve as a model for states to follow in defining similar mechanisms to support prepayment of electricity dues by their own departments.
