India to launch National Hydrogen Mission

The Prime Minister (PM) of India has announced the launch of a National Hydrogen Missionto meet the target achieving self-reliance in energy by 2047.

As per this mission, India has plans to generate green hydrogen, a carbon-free fuel, from renewables. Presently,India spends over Rs 12 trillion on energy imports annually and is 85 per cent of oil demand is met via imports. The roadmap for energy efficiency is to increase the usage of natural gas, setting up a network for compressed natural gas (CNG) supply and piped natural gas supply across the country, blending 20 per cent ethanol in petrol and electric mobility. Notably, India recently achieved the target of 100 GW of installed renewable energy capacity.
