NTPC to set up pilot project on hydrogen blending with natural gas in CGD

NTPC Limited has floated a tender to invite global expression of interest (EoI) to set up a pilot project on hydrogen blending with natural gasfor city gas distribution (CGD).

This pilot project will be the first of its kind in India. It would explore the viability of decarbonising India’s natural gas grid. NTPC eventually intends to take this up at a commercial scale across India to facilitate its transition to a hydrogen economy. The successful execution of the pilot project will demonstrate the target of decarbonisation along with import substitution under the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan. Additionally, NTPC is exploring avenues in production of green ammonia to decarbonise the fertiliser industry and fulfil the government’s upcoming mandate of using a certain percentage of green hydrogen in the fertilizer and refinery sector. Detailed study on green methanol production at Ramagundam has been completed and the company will be taking the final investment decision in the near future.
