GE commissions Africa’s first fully digital substation in Senegal

GE Renewable Energy’s Grid Solutions business has commissioned the first ever fully digital high voltage substation on the African continent.

The 225 kV substation is located in Thiès, 70 km from Dakar in Senegal. The project is part of Senegal’s national electricity company Senelec’s transmission and distribution (T&D) grid expansion programme, which is being executed by Vinci Energies West Africa. GE and Vinci Energies signed a contract for the substation project in 2018. GE’s scope of contract included the delivery, commissioning, installation and supervision of the digital substation, panels, digital control system, and optical current transducer and optical voltage transducer.
