Coal TPPs running on low stockpiles

The country’s coal thermal power plants (TPPs) are running extremely low on stockpiles.

According to data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the stockpiles have fallen to the lowest since November 2017. As inventories are depleting, plants may be forced to import expensive coal or pay premiums at domestic auctions. A sharp rise in electricity demand after the pandemic is straining fuel supply chains across the world. Electricity demand from state discoms have increased as economic activity has rebounded.
