India faces coal crisis in the face of surging power demand

Indian power utilities are facing a supply crunch for coal as their inventories have hit critical lows after a surge in power demand from industries.

India has 135 coal-based thermal power plants of which over half have fuel stocks of less than three days which is far short of central government’sguidelines which recommends supplies of at least two weeks. India is facing sluggish imports due to high global prices.The coal inventory in power plants are expected to improve gradually.
