Philippine SMC Global’s subsidiary applies to link battery storage facility to grid

Universal Power Solutions has requested the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) in the Philippines for approval to link its 60 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Concepcion, Tarlac to the Luzon grid.

Universal Power has filed a request with the ERC, to sanction the company’s investment in a dedicated transmission line connecting the BESS to a 69 kV substation owned and operated by the concessionaire for the Philippine transmission network, National Grid Corporation of Philippines (NGCP). According to the company, construction of the line is a prerequisite for testing, commissioning, and commercial operation of its BESS project, which aims to provide the grid with regulating reserves.SMC Global is spending over $1 billion to simultaneously build 31 new BESS facilities nationwide, with a rated capacity of 1,000 MW. The aforementioned BESS is part of the target, wherein the firm plans on improving power quality throughout the grid system and facilitate integration of renewable power sources into the country’s generation portfolio.
