TPPs to require 10 million tonnes of imported coal this fiscal

Thermal power plants (TPPs) in India are expected to require to import 10 million tonnes of coal in 2021-22to build stock to last through next summer.

As per the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) estimates, a total 398 million tonnes of domestic coal is required by the power plants. The TPPs need 40 million tonnes of domestic coal for adequate stocks and 10 million tonnes are required to meet 30 per cent shortfall electricity generation, i.e., to make up for the generation loss due to non-operalisation of 17 GW capacity of TPPs which are fully dependent on imported coal. The imported coal is presently priced at $160 per tonne. Of the domestic requirements, Coal India Limited is expected to meet 338 million tonnes, Singareni Collieries Company Limited another 30 million tonnes and the captive coal mines are expected to produce 40 million tonnes.
