Coal dispatch to power sector rises by 27 per cent in October

Coal dispatch to the power sector has increased by 27.13 per cent year-on-year in October 2021, owing to a spurt in power demand amid unprecedented rise in import prices.

Coal supply to the power sector, which was 46.98 million tonnes in October 2020 rose to 59.73 million tonnes in October 2021. However, the supply of coal to the sponge iron declined by 29.2 per cent to 0.46 million tonnes and to the cement sector dropped to 0.47 million tonnes. The Ministry of Coal had asked Coal India Limited (CIL) and its subsidiaries to ensure that at least 18 days of coal stock is maintained with thermal power plants by the end of November.
