UP  starts interest waiver scheme for electricity consumers on bill arrears

The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government has started a scheme for interest waiver on bill arrears for electricity consumers.

The money realised will be used for system improvement as the state energy department is already facing a deficit of Rs 900 billion. The loan waiver scheme has been introduced as about 70 per cent of rural consumers and 25 per cent of urban consumers have turned defaulters due to not being able to pay their bills on time. The facility to pay the arrears in six easy instalments has also been extended for domestic consumers. Commercial consumers have been brought under the ambit of the scheme and respite has also been provided to small shopkeepers hit by the pandemic.
