Thailand power agencies to purchase electricity from hydro projects in Laos

Thailand’s National Energy Policy Committee (NECP) has allowed national power authorities to purchase electricity from three hydropower projects in Laos, after a long delay.

Hydro energy will be sourced from Nam Gneum 3 Dam, Pak Beng Dam and Pak Lay Dam. The Government of Laos will also go ahead with plans to develop more hydropower projects, including two dams on the Mekong River, to increase capacity of its energy exports. Officials are evaluating the possibility of selling all the power generated from these projects to Thailand. The Pak Beng Dam and the Pak Lay Dam Mekong River is expected to commence construction soon. Works on these projects had been delayed due to uncertainty about demand from Thailand’s energy market.
