Government amends norms to allow gencos to replace thermal power with RE under existing PPAs

The Ministry of Power (MoP) and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) have amended norms to allow gencos to bundle renewable energy (RE) under existing power purchase agreements (PPAs).

The revised norms would enable replacement of thermal power with energy from renewable sources under existing power purchase agreements (PPAs). This is a part of larger efforts to have 500 GW of clean energy generation capacity by 2030. As the cost of renewablesis less than that of thermal energy, the gains from the bundling will be shared between the generator and discoms or other procurers on a fifty-fifty basis.
