Interview with Anup Bhargava, Executive Director & Region Head Indo-Pacific, Dornier Group GmbH

What is your perspective on the current state of the energy sector?

India is passing through energy transition and aligning itself with the global environmental compliance commitments. India has committed to achieve net zero emissions by 2070 and plans to have non-fossil energy capacity of 500 GW by 2030. India also plans to meet 50 per cent of its energy requirements from renewable energy by 2030.

The rush for putting coal-fired power plants has diminished as India now focusses on generation from renewable energy resources like solar, wind, hydro and biomass. With this comes the implementation of operational flexibility and performance upgrades for existing coal and gas-based power plants, and adding energy storage solutions to support the grid. We also have to implement emission control systems for all coal-based power plants for utilities and industries to comply with emission norms within next 2 years based on CEA phasing plan. The focus is on large and efficient units of at least 500 MW and should have a balance life of at least 10 years for flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) capex in a competitive electricity market.

Dornier Group of companies specialises in providing sustainability and climate change solutions. Our group’s energy consulting company VPC GmbH (formerly Vattenfall Power Consult) can contribute to provide plant specific design, engineering and help in project implementation of generation, transmission and distribution, and energy storage solutions to the India region market. We can also provide a range of “Asset Management” solutions and customise them to individual thermal, hydro and renewable generation projects, and also for designing energy storage solutions for efficient dispatch of energy to the grid. The group companies are also providing services for sustainability and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Recently, we established our second group company in India as Dornier Group (India) Private Limited and have been actively supporting Indo-Pacific region for energy and infrastructure business. Dornier India provides engineering and field services to the group companies utilising India and regional experts for gas based combined cycle power plants, FGD projects, hybrid energy / distributed grid solutions, transmission & distribution, ground water management, asset valuations, market research and recently hydrogen project. We have now experienced staff to provide all these services to the Indian market too.

What are the company’s core competencies?

Dornier Group is a leading international engineering, consulting and project implementation consultant for energy and infrastructure. We also provide operations and maintenance solutions to the thermal power plant, including overhauling services.

What are some of the key projects/clientele served by the Dornier Group in the energy sector (conventional and RE)?

Dornier Group of Companies provides engineering and consulting services to both government and private sector, directly and through IFIs. Now being in India, we are working directly with local customers in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka partnering with local companies, and training of our staff by our German experts.

 What is your outlook for the sector? What are some of the emerging technologies/solutions?  

We have vast experience in implementing flexibility upgrades to coal fired power plants  so that power plants can operate on low load without using oil support, and also optimising the power plant in terms of auxiliary load consumption and heat rate. These are plant specific solutions where OEMs have to design the system for plant’s operation requirement and dispatch of energy.

We are currently working on providing asset management solutions for the transmission and distribution sector, new generation of waste to energy solutions with improved conversion efficiency, and also energy storage solutions using Li-Ion battery, hydrogen and pump storage. We provide market research, technology selection, basic design, technology transfer and localisation, engineering and project implementation consultancy.
