Hitachi Energy delivers 150kV substation to ensure Java grid reliability

Japan-based Hitachi Energy has completed the delivery of a 150kV digital substation to state-owned PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN Persero) to ensure power supply stability of the East Java grid in Indonesia.

The digital substation, which covers an area of 1.5 hectares, will connect the Sidoarjo Industrial Estate to the PLN grid, providing reliable power connection to the manufacturing companies in the area. The substation is also expected to aid in decarbonisation by allowing renewable energy to be integrated into the power grid. With the use of fibre optic cable rather than copper cables for operational data interchange, the digitisation of PLN’s Sidoarjo substation intends to reduce operation and maintenance expenses and minimise electrical risk. The new substation will employ the latest communication protocols and system to ensure seamless bidirectional digital data interchange between main equipment, protective equipment, the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system, and the regional control centre. Furthermore, centralised monitoring will allow for the rapid detection and correction of faults, reducing network downtime. This will allow PLN to maintain a consistent supply of power to the industrial estate and to improve dependability by splitting the energy load and distribution across the Bangil and New Porong districts.
