Pertamina and Marubeni to develop decarbonisation projects in Indonesia

PT Pertamina has partnered with Japan-based Marubeni Corporationto develop a wide range of decarbonisation projects, including bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS)project at Marubeni’s pulp mill in Indonesia, produce biomass fuels, and create carbon credits.

The Governments of Japan and Indonesia have a bilateral carbon offset agreement that encourages Japan-based companies to invest in low-carbon technologies, goods, services, systems, and infrastructure in Indonesia. This move supports Marubeni’s aim to withdraw from coal-fired power projects by 2050 as well as the Government of Indonesia’s target to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 29 per cent by 2030. Pertamina also intends to add 10GW of renewable energy power generation capacity by 2026.
