Construction begins on Jordan-Iraq interconnector

Jordan’s National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) has begun construction works on the Jordan-Iraq Power Transmission Project (JIPT), which involves the construction of 300-km-long, 400 kV transmission line connecting the Al-Risha substation in Jordan with the Al-Qaim electrical transformation station in Iraq.

It also includes the commissioning of switchgear at the 400/132/33 kV Risha substation. Meanwhile, Iraq also announced that it has commenced work on the project by checking the power transmission line routes, connection stations, and soil. Further, procedures have begun and construction work is underway for the Al-Qaim line, to complete the power route with Jordan. The UAE’s Ducab Group had won the contract for the line in 2021. The project will provide 1,000 GWh of energy to Iraq after the completion of Phase I, and is expected to be completed on time by end-2022.
