Tamil Nadu invites bids to handle transport of coal from Odisha to overcome power shortage

The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Company Limited (TANGEDCO) has floated tender inviting bidders to handle movement of about 0.26 milliontonnes of coal from various mines of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL).

The coal will be moved from the mines to the ports by rail and then through sea route to the discharge ports at Ennore, Karaikal and Thoothukudi. The delivery period will commence in May 2022 and will be completed by June 2022. The coal will be moved from MCL’s mines at Hingula, Ananta, Garjanbahal, Lakhanpur and Kulda in Odisha. The bids should be submitted on or before April 27, 2022. The tender has been floated to tide overthepower shortage situation in the state. Reportedly, this summer, the state reached an all-time peak demand of 17,196 MW on March 29, 2022. Tamil Nadu’s coal requirement is 72,000 tonnes a day while the supply is 48,000-50,000 tonnes.
