AfDB and Swedfund collaborate to promote private sector participation in transmission projects in Africa

The African Development Bank (AfDB) and Sweden’s Development Finance Institution, Swedfund International AB (Swedfund), have announced plans to collaborate to increase private sector participation in independent power transmission line projects in Africa.

Under the formal agreement, AfDB and Swedfund will promote private sector participation mainly through public-private partnerships (PPP). This will be accomplished through assisting African countries with project planning and consulting services in order to attract private sector investment and PPP initiatives, along with stakeholder capacity building. The collaboration will help AfDB to leverage Swedfund resources to assist Africa’s regional member governments in the construction of high-impact public-private power transmission projects that will increase renewable energy penetration in the grid and help move Africa closer to a clean energy transition. It will also support the selection of priority projects as well as the construction of bankable transmission line projects.
