Government of Vietnam invests over USD800 million in Laos’ power projects

The Government of Vietnam has invested around USD815 million to finance multiple hydropower and mining projects in the Attapeu province of Laos.

Out of the total investment, USD691 million will be used to finance four hydropower projects in the province including the Xekaman 1, Xekaman Sanxay, Xekong Loum A and Xekong Loum B hydropower plants. These facilities are scheduled to commence commercial operation in 2025. Other power projects include a thermal, a solar, a biomass power plant and some transmission lines. Meanwhile, USD30.8 million has been invested to construct a transformer station in Attapeau and USD93.3 million will be invested in the province’s mining sector. The Government of Vietnam is currently financing around 417 projects in Laos worth USD4.3 billion and ranks third in the country’s source of foreign investments.
