African Union to launch AfSEM for creation of single power market

The African Union (AU) has launched the African Single Electricity Market (AfSEM) to interconnect all the 55 African Union Member States via the creation of a reliable, inexpensive, and sustainable power market.

The initiative is being supported by the Continental Power System Master Plan being developed by the African Union Development Agency-New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD) to harmonise regulatory regimes across the African region. Once operational, AfSEM will be the largest interconnected electricity grid as well as the largest intraregional power trading system in the world. The first phase of AfSEM is expected to be achieved by 2023 with full operations by 2040.
