The Ministry of Power (MoP) has accorded investment approval for pre-investment activities for 1,856 MW Sawalkot hydroelectric project in the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir.
The MoP has approved an investment of Rs 9.73 billion at November 2021 price level. The project is being implemented by NHPC Limited. Sawalkot project is a run-of-the-river project proposed on the river Chenab in district Ramban and Udhampur of Jammu and Kashmir. In January 2021, NHPC signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Jammu and Kashmir administration for developing the much-delayed Sawalkot hydro-electric project which has been postponed since its conception in 1984.
