Malaysia’s Northern Grid Extension to come online in 2024

The Northern Grid Extension in Malaysia is expected to go online in 2024 allowing for energy exports from Sarawak to Sabah.

As a part of this, 30 MW of electricity will be transmitted to Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB). The generation and transmission project is in the commercial negotiation stage. Work on the extension project will be carried out in phases. Sarawak’s current grid has a capacity of 5,996 MW while electricity usage in the region is 4,398 MW. There is excess capacity of 1,478 MW which can be exported to other states and countries. Between 2016-2022, Sarawak exported 89.6 MW of electricity every year to Kalimantan in Indonesia.
