Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) has commissioned the 400 kV Karuma–Olwiyo and 132 kV Karuma–Lira transmission lines, and the Olwiyo substation for evacuation of power from USD7 billion, the 600 MW Karuma hydropower project on River Nile in Uganda.
The project has been successfully synchronised and supplies 40 MW of power to the national grid. The completion of the Olwiyo substation will enable the supply of power to Gulu and West Nile from the Lira substation through the 33 kV distribution network. Sino Hydro Corporation Limited has implemented the project under supervision of UEGCL. The project, which is a symbol of Uganda-China cooperation, was initially slated for commissioning in 2018, but was extended several times due to various reasons.
