In a major development, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has decided to issue a license to National Transmission Company South Africa SOC Limited (NTCSA) for operating the country’s transmission system.
This decision is a key part of Eskom’s strategic objective to separate into three entities: generation, distribution, and transmission, as outlined in the Department of Public Enterprises’ Roadmap for Eskom in a reformed electricity supply industry. The issuance of transmission license is a significant milestone in this legal separation process of the transmission division. Additionally, NTCSA has applied for trading and import/export licenses, which is currently being reviewed by NERSA. Obtaining the requisite operating licenses is essential for NTCSA to become operational.
