The total installed power generation capacity stood at around 416 GW in March 2023. Thermal capacity accounted for a 57 per cent share followed by renewables (30 per cent), hydel (11 per cent) and nuclear (2 per cent) capacity.
In terms of ownership, the share of the central and state sectors in the total installed capacity has declined over the past 10 years, while the private sector’s share has increased, and dominates at 51 per cent as of March 2023.
