The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has recently released a report on reverse charging of the grid from EV batteries. The ministry of power had in March 2023 asked CEA to frame guidelines for reverse charging of grid from batteries of EVs, following which a committee was constituted under the authority’s chairman. The report looks at the services that EVs can provide to the power system through smart charging, challenges, implementation requirements and way forward for the smooth integration of EVs in the grid. The report states that V2G smart charging can help reduce costs by complementing the EV charging load and distribution load profile. For instance, if a high number of EVs are concentrated in a region in an uncontrolled charging environment, the local grid can be impacted. Besides, additional EV charging load would require infusion of additional generation capacity, the report notes.
