The Ministry of Coal is setting ambitious targets for the production of 186.63 million tonne (mt) of coal exclusively from captive/commercial coal mines in the fiscal year 2024-25.
The production goal is expected to escalate to 225.69 mt in 2025-26, and the ministry’s present plans envision a production target of 383.56 mt from such mines by 2029-30. As of December 31, 2023, the ministry reports that 50 captive/commercial coal mines are actively producing. Among these, 32 mines are allocated to the power sector, 11 to the non-regulated sector, and seven mines are designated for the sale of coal. Since the commencement of the Commercial Coal Mines Auction in 2020, six mines with a cumulative peak rated capacity of 14.87 mt have already commenced production within three and a half years.
