The Ministry of Coal has extended the deadline for the submission of self-evaluation for the star rating of coal and lignite mines for the fiscal year 2023-24.
Initially set for July 15, 2024, the new deadline is July 31, 2024. This extension aims to encourage maximum participation and provide more mines with the opportunity to register and complete the self-evaluation process. The star rating policy evaluates mines based on seven key parameters: mining operations, environment-related factors, adoption of technologies, best mining practices, economic performance, rehabilitation and resettlement, and worker-related compliance and safety and security. The top 10 per cent of highest-scoring mines will undergo further validation through committee inspections, while the remaining 90 per cent will be reviewed online by the regional offices of the Coal Controller Organization. The comprehensive review will be finalised by October 31, 2024, with the final results published by January 31, 2025.
