Last 10 Years: Installed capacity, by fuel and sector

As of March 2024, the total installed power generation capacity stood at around 441,969 MW. Thermal capacity accounted for 55.03 per cent (243,216 MW), followed by renewables at 32.5 per cent (143,644 MW), hydel at 10.62 per cent (46,928 MW), and nuclear at 1.85 per cent (8,180 MW).

In terms of ownership, the share of the central and state sectors in the total installed capacity has declined over the past 10 years. Meanwhile, the private sector’s share has increased to 52 per cent as of  March 2024, dominating the market.
