The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has recognised the surface hydrokinetic turbine (SHKT) technology under the hydro power category to encourage innovations and explore alternative methods for achieving net-zero emissions and sustainable power development.
SHKT uses the kinetic energy of flowing water to generate electricity without requiring the construction of large structures like dams or weirs to create potential energy. This makes it different from conventional hydropower systems. The growing demand for round-the-clock renewable energy, especially in areas with poor grid access. SHKT turbines are cost-effective, with a generation cost of Rs 2-3 per unit, making it beneficial for both energy producers and consumers.
