Envision Energy secures BESS contract in South Africa

Envision Energy has been awarded a major contract by a consortium led by France’s EDF to supply battery energy storage system (BESS) for the Oasis 1 project in South Africa. The initiative includes three energy storage sites—Oasis Aggeneis, Oasis Mookodi, and Oasis Nieuwehoop situated in Northern Cape Province, with a total capacity of 257 MW and 1,028 MWh, and marks the largest BESS project in South Africa. The deal involves the supply of advanced energy storage technology, including both AC and direct current (DC) systems, complemented by supervisory control and data acquisition and energy management solutions. Each site will feature modular 20- foot storage units with a capacity of 5 MWh, powered by high-efficiency 315Ah cells. The company is also expected to manage their lifecycle operation and maintenance for 15 years. These facilities, part of South Africa’s inaugural Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, will include a 5 per cent ownership stake for local communities via a Community Trust
