Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has commissioned two units of the 6×170 MW Punatsangchhu-II hydroelectric project (PHEP-II) in Bhutan.
The project, a bilateral initiative between the Government of India and the Royal Government of Bhutan, is located in the Wangdue district of western Bhutan.The project features a francis turbine designed to operate at a head of 241 meters, the highest for this type of turbine in Bhutan. When fully operational, the project’s six units will generate 4,357 GWh annually. BHEL’s scope included the design, manufacture, supply, installation, and commissioning of electro-mechanical works, including vertical francis turbines, synchronous generators. The equipment was supplied from BHEL’s facilities in Bhopal, Jhansi, and Bengaluru, with on-site work managed by the company’s power sector–eastern region division.
