Brajesh Kumar is chief business officer (CBO) (senior executive vice president) at BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL), where he currently leads business operations. He joined BSES in 2009 and held various roles across departments before assuming his current position. With over 30 years of diverse experience, Kumar has previously worked in sales and marketing with leading organisations such as Hindalco (Aditya Birla Group), Sterlite (Vedanta Group) and Jindal Steel and Power Limited.

As CBO, Kumar has been instrumental in reducing the company, losses, driving digital initiatives, enhancing consumer services and promoting the adoption of new technologies such as rooftop solar and electric vehicle (EV) charging. Under his strategic guidance, BSES has installed over 200 EV charging stations. He also played an important role as a stakeholder in formalising the Delhi EV policy. In his current role, he spearheads new technology initiatives such as smart-managed and renewable energy-supported charging stations. Kumar is also credited with setting up India’s first smart-managed charging station in Delhi and East Delhi’s first public charging station at BYPL’s premises. Kumar has played a key role in reducing BYPL’s distribution losses from 24 per cent to 7 per cent (2015-24) by driving network improvements and community engagement. He has also led solar rooftop metering metering efforts and expanded EV charging infrastructure development, supporting sustainability and non-tariff income. According to Kumar, BYPL addresses renewable energy integration by tackling forecasting and grid management challenges posed by renewable energy’s intermittent nature. The integration of local renewable energy eases network stress, supports peak demand and reduces losses. Currently, BYPL has 42 MW of distributed rooftop solar capacity and 421 MW of renewable capacity connected at the procurement level.

Kumar’s management style is a blend of democratic, transformational and coaching approaches. He fosters autonomy, shared decision-making and inclusion, inspiring his team with a clear vision and long-term growth.
