The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity has finalised agreements with Linxon—a company formed by combining AtkinsRéalis’ project management expertise and Hitachi Energy’s industry-leading technological knowledge with over 60 years of substation and electrification project experience worldwide—to rehabilitate three 400 kV bulk supply point substations located in North and South Baghdad, and Diyala.
The projects are a part of Iraq’s electrical super grid expansion and will be financed through Swedish Svensk Exportkredit and Exportkreditnämnden loans. The planned rehabilitation includes upgradation of electrical systems, modernisation of protection and control mechanisms, and improvement of infrastructure to ensure stable power distribution and reduce technical losses. Furthermore, Iraq is making conscious efforts to diversify its energy mix with largescale solar projects. Some of the major solar initiatives, including projects by TotalEnergies and Abu Dhabi-based major renewable energy group Masdar, are underway.
