NHPC plans to invest over Rs 800 billion for 20 GW pumped storage and renewable projects

Reportedly, NHPC Limited has announced plans to invest over Rs 800 billion in developing 20 GW of pumped storage projects (PSPs) and renewable energy projects across India.

The company is focusing on PSPs, which function as large energy storage systems by pumping water to a higher elevation during low-demand periods and releasing it to generate electricity when demand peaks. This will help balance the grid as more intermittent renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, are integrated. Additionally, NHPC is expanding its solar and wind energy portfolio and is in the process of setting up a dedicated green energy subsidiary. The company plans to list this subsidiary on the stock market by the financial year 2026-27 to attract investments and accelerate the growth of its renewable energy assets.
