SCI Group has completed the 156 MW Nam Sam 3 hydropower plant in Laos, which has now commenced commercial operations. The project has been handed over to Nam Sam 3 Power Sole Limited Company, a subsidiary of Phongsubthavy Group. It is located in Houaphan province near the Laos-Vietnam border, the project features a 121.7-metre-high RCC dam, a 9.1 km tunnel, and a 225-metre surge tank. It connects to a 230 kV substation for power evacuation. Construction began in October 2019 and faced challenges such as difficult terrain, extreme weather conditions, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these obstacles, the project was completed on schedule. Following a successful 72-hour reliability test, the plant entered full operation in February 2025. It is expected to generate 626 million kWh annually, contributing to Vietnam’s energy security and regional economic development.
