The Union Ministry of Power has set a target to install smart and prepaid meters in government offices, buildings, and residential colonies by August 2025.
The objective is to reduce aggregate technical and commercial losses and improve billing accuracy through the implementation of these meters. During the Western States Power Conference, the Union Power Minister highlighted the importance of cooperation and coordination between the Central and State Governments in achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047. Emphasis was laid on ensuring resource adequacy and securing necessary power purchase agreements. States were encouraged to develop adequate storage capacities through pumped storage projects and battery energy storage systems. The need to enhance the country’s nuclear generation capacity was also stressed, with a target of reaching 100 GW by 2047. Additionally, the creation of special zones for green energy was proposed as a crucial step toward achieving net zero emissions.
