Sungrow has signed a supply and long-term service term sheet with Globeleq for the 153 MW / 612 MWh Red Sands battery energy storage system (BESS) project in South Africa.
The agreement includes the supply of Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled energy storage system and a 15-year operations and maintenance contract. The project is located in the Northern Cape and the Red Sands project is part of South Africa’s battery energy storage independent power producer procurement programme. It will connect to the grid through Eskom’s Garona substation. The project will span around 5 hectares and is positioned to support South Africa’s power system through load shifting, grid stabilisation and enhanced renewable energy integration. It is expected to reach financial close in 2025 and commence operations in 2027.
