THDC India Limited has commisioned operation of the second unit (250 MW) of the 1,000 MW variable speed pumped storage plant (PSP) at Tehri, Uttarakhand, taking the cumulative operational capacity to 500 MW.
Tehri PSP is India’s first variable speed PSP and among the largest by any Central Public Sector Enterprise. The first unit began operation in June 2025. The power electronics and 250 MW variable-speed hydro unit have been supplied by GE Vernova. The plant is designed to provide flexible peaking power and grid-balancing support using surplus solar power for daytime pumping.
