The Philippines has approved the Philippine National Nuclear Energy Safety Act to establish the Philippine Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (PhilATOM) as an independent, quasi-judicial nuclear regulatory body.
PhilATOM will be responsible for ensuring the safe use of nuclear energy, including the licensing of nuclear-related activities, regulation of radioactive materials transport and storage, and compliance with international safety commitments such as those under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The law prohibits unauthorised construction, operation, or decommissioning of nuclear facilities, as well as any unlicensed handling or use of radioactive substances.
