NamPower commissions Africa’s first fully digital substation

NamPower, has commissioned Africa’s first fully digital substation, the 132/66/33 kV Sekelduin substation located east of Swakopmund in the Erongo region.

The NAD394 million facility is designed to support coastal load growth, enhance reliability and strengthen the regional grid. It features process bus applications compliant with IEC 61850 standards, reducing copper cabling, improving fault detection, enabling remote monitoring and ensuring secure supervisory control and data acquisition integration. The substation incorporates mixed technology switchgear, hybrid air- and gas-insulated switchgear.
