As of March 2025, the total installed power generation capacity stood at around 475,212 MW. Thermal capacity accounted for 51.96 per cent (246,935 MW) of the total 475,212 MW, followed by renewables at 36.27 per cent (172,368 MW), hydel at 10.04 per cent (47,728 MW) and nuclear at 1.72 per cent (8,180 MW).
In terms of ownership, the share of the central and state sectors in total installed capacity has decreased over the past 10 years. Meanwhile, the private sector’s share has increased and dominates with a 54 per cent share as of March 2025.
